Meet Dr. Bruce Colton, OD
Education
Bruce Colton, O.D. earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Brigham Young University, and his Doctorate in Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry. While at the University of Houston, he completed a two-year research fellowship with the National Institute of Health using stem cells to restore vision lost to macular degeneration. Dr. Colton also taught Molecular and Microbiology at the University of Houston, and was voted best instructor two years in a row. He was awarded the Family Vision Solutions Gas Permeable Contact Lens Award and the A.C. Marcaccio Community Service Award, in addition to being inducted into the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society for academic achievement.
Clinical Rotation
Dr. Colton went on to complete his internship rotation in ocular disease at Cedar Springs Eye Clinic in Dallas, where he performed minor surgeries, and treated glaucoma and infections. Dr. Colton completed a second rotation in medical specialty contact lenses at Space Center Eye Associates in Houston. There Dr. Colton provided vision care for NASA astronauts and worked alongside Dr. F. Keith Manuel, a world-renowned expert on specialty contact lenses.
Professional Licenses
Dr. Colton is licensed as a Therapeutic Optometrist and board certified as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. He is certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry to perform medical eye exams and administer injections. He is registered with the DEA to prescribe and administer ophthalmic drugs, including oral antibiotics, glaucoma drops, and pain medication. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association.
Community Service
Dr. Colton has given volunteer service all around the world. He lived in the farming communities of northern Argentina for two years, helping people to overcome addictions, reach their goals, and achieve family happiness. He lived with his wife in a small coastal fishing town in China for four months teaching English to underprivileged elementary school children. He traveled to rural Guatemala in 2013 and 2014 to provide eye care to hundreds of indigenous Mayans. He provides eye screenings for Special Olympics athletes in Houston and Arlington.
Clinical Expertise
He most enjoys helping patients suffering from dry eyes and ocular disease, and treating children with myopia (near-sightedness) with specialty contacts to prevent their eyes from getting worse each year. He also enjoys fitting multi-focal (bifocal) contact lenses and difficult-to-fit lenses for patients with corneal disease. He uses the latest technology to diagnose eye diseases and keeps up with the newest eye treatments for his patients.
Family Life
In his free time, Dr. Colton plays with his four kids: 7-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, 2-year-old twin boys, and takes his wife on dates to her favorite Mexican restaurants. Dr. Colton and his family have egg-laying hens and a large vegetable garden, which they use to grow their own food. He speaks in Spanish with his kids. Dr. Colton plays organ for his local church and organizes local service projects. In September 2017, Dr. Colton took a group of 19 volunteers to Houston and restored homes damaged by Hurricane Harvey.
